Zophobas

Zophobas, also known as superworms or Zophobas morio, are a popular feeder insect for reptiles, birds, and some small mammals. They are characterized by their high protein content and a firm, chitin-rich exoskeleton, which is why they are particularly used to promote vitality and as a varied addition to the diet.

Since Zophobas are relatively low in fat but very high in energy, they are suitable for both regular feeding and as a treat. However, it is advisable not to feed them exclusively to ensure a balanced diet for the animals.

Zophobas should be fed live, as this best preserves their nutrients and encourages natural hunting behavior in the animals. It is recommended to offer the larvae in small quantities and as varied as possible together with other feeder insects. Before feeding, Zophobas can be dusted with vitamin or mineral-rich powder to optimize nutrient supply.

Feeding should be done in moderation, as Zophobas can quickly lead to obesity due to their size and fat content. Uneaten insects should be removed, as they can burrow into the substrate or even injure the animals.
