Desert locusts (Schistocerca gregaria) are a popular and high-quality live food for many reptile species. Due to their high nutritional value, natural agility, and availability, they have established themselves as ideal feeder insects in terrariums.
· Nutrient-rich: Desert locusts offer a balanced ratio of proteins, fats, and fiber. They also contain important vitamins and minerals, such as calcium and phosphorus, which are essential for the growth and health of reptiles.
· Natural prey: Their jumping ability and activity promote the natural hunting behavior of many reptiles and thus contribute to species-appropriate engagement.
· Versatility: They are suitable for a variety of reptile species, including bearded dragons, chameleons, geckos, and agamas.
· Uncomplicated keeping: Desert locusts can be easily stored in special containers and fed with fresh vegetables and grasses.
It is recommended to gut-load the locusts with nutrient-rich food (e.g., carrots, lettuce, special insect food) before feeding to optimize nutrient intake for the reptile.
· Uneaten locusts should be removed from the terrarium after 30 minutes at the latest to avoid stress for the reptile.
