Drosophila

Due to their low fat content and handy size, Drosophila, also known as fruit flies, are an ideal feeder insect for small reptiles, young amphibians, and various bird species. They are excellently suited as a first live food for young animals, as they are easily digestible and encourage natural hunting instincts.

Drosophila can be introduced live directly into the terrarium, where their active movement stimulates hunting behavior. They are indispensable, especially for rearing and for small species. For optimal nutrient supply, it is recommended to feed the flies with vitamin- or mineral-rich food ("gut-loading") before feeding them to the animals.

Feeding should be done in manageable quantities to avoid overpopulation in the terrarium. Uneaten flies can be removed from the enclosure to prevent hygiene problems.
